Rivet Nut Guide: How to Choose the Right One for Sheet Metal
Sheet metal is thin. You often can't tap a thread into it directly — there's not enough material for the threads to hold under real load. That's the exact problem a rivet nut solves: it gives you a permanent, reusable threaded hole in material too thin to thread on its own.
If you're specifying fasteners for enclosures, brackets, HVAC panels, or any sheet-metal assembly, here's what actually matters when choosing one.
What a Rivet Nut Actually Does
A rivet nut (also called an insert nut) is installed into a pre-drilled hole from one side only — no access needed to the back of the panel. A setting tool pulls the nut's body, causing it to collapse and form a second "head" on the blind side, clamping the nut permanently into the sheet. What's left is a proper machine-thread hole in material that could never have held a tapped thread on its own.
This is why rivet nuts are everywhere in enclosure and panel fabrication: they're the only practical way to get a strong, reusable thread into thin material with one-sided access.
What to Check Before You Order
1. Material Steel rivet nuts are standard for general use. Stainless steel is worth the extra cost for outdoor, humid, or corrosive environments — coastal installations especially. Aluminium rivet nuts exist for lighter-duty, non-structural applications where corrosion between dissimilar metals is a concern.
2. Grip range This is the panel thickness range the rivet nut is designed to clamp. Get this wrong and the nut either won't seat properly or won't clamp tightly enough to resist spinning under torque. Always check grip range against your actual panel thickness — don't assume a "standard" size fits everything.
3. Head style Flat head sits flush and is the most common. Countersunk head is used where a fully flush, low-profile finish matters (visible panels, enclosures). Cylindrical/round head gives slightly more bearing surface for softer materials.
4. Thread size Match to whatever's being bolted in — M4, M5, M6, M8 are the common sizes for enclosure and bracket work. Going oversized doesn't add strength if the panel itself is the limiting factor.
5. Knurled vs plain body Knurled (splined) bodies resist spinning in the hole under torque — worth specifying for anything that will see repeated bolt removal and reinstallation, since a plain body can eventually spin freely in a worn hole.
Rivet Nut vs Pop Rivet — Not the Same Thing
These get confused because they're installed with similar tools. A Pop Rivet (Blind Rivet) permanently joins two pieces of material together — it doesn't create a removable, threaded connection. A Rivet Nut / Insert Nut creates a threaded hole you can bolt into and remove from repeatedly. If you need a permanent joint, use a rivet. If you need a bolt to go in and come out again, you need a rivet nut.
