Self-Drilling vs Self-Tapping Screws: What's the Difference?

These two get mixed up constantly, partly because both promise to skip pre-drilling. But they solve different problems, and using the wrong one is one of the most common causes of stripped fixings and rework on site.

The Core Difference

Self-drilling screws have a drill-point tip — literally shaped like a tiny drill bit. They cut their own pilot hole and thread simultaneously, in one motion, even through metal. No pre-drilling required at all, even into steel.

Self-tapping screws have a sharp, pointed tip but no drilling flute. They cut their own thread as they're driven in, but they still need a pre-drilled pilot hole to start — they can't bore through solid material on their own.

The confusion happens because both are marketed as needing "no pre-tapped thread." True for both. But only self-drilling screws need no pilot hole at all.
